Psychology (Online)

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology provides quality general education in the psychological sciences. The curriculum reflects current trends in the science, theory and practice of psychology. Undergraduates may pursue the B.A. in psychology as a liberal arts degree, in preparation for graduate or professional training in psychology, social work, education, law, medicine, business, and other disciplines and/or to work in para-professional jobs under the direction of licensed or certified professionals. The program consists of 120 credit hours, including completion of the university core curriculum, courses in five key sub-disciplines within psychology (experimental, social, applied, personality/abnormal, developmental), statistics, research methods/lab courses, and electives.

Psychology - Industrial-Organizational Psychology

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology provides quality general education in the psychological sciences. The curriculum reflects current trends in the science, theory and practice of psychology. The Industrial-Organizational Psychology Track is designed for students who would like to gain a better understanding of the field of industrial organizational psychology. Industrial organizational psychology is the scientific study of working and the application of that science to workplace issues facing individuals, teams, and organizations. The required courses expose students to career possibilities in the field of I-O psychology and provide a basis for further study at the graduate level. Students who complete the I-O track will graduate well prepared to enter the workforce or to pursue an advanced degree. The program consists of 120 credit hours, including completion of the university core curriculum, courses in five key sub-disciplines within psychology (experimental, social, applied, personality/abnormal, developmental), statistics, research methods/lab courses, and electives.

Public Policy and Service (Online)

The Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA) degree is offered for students interested in beginning or continuing a public service career and for those who wish to continue in public administration at the graduate level. Coursework in policy analysis and implementation, community and urban development, and fiscal management prepares students for careers in the public and nonprofit sectors. The BPA is offered in both a traditional on-campus setting and in an on-line format.

Public Relations Advertising and Applied Communications

The PRAAC degree allows students to create more of their own degree program, allowing them to take courses in both Public Relations and Advertising as well as other types of communication (public speaking, communication studies, and digital media). It is different from the previous tracks in Advertising and Public Relations in that it focuses more clearly and specifically on the skills and topics related to Public Relations, Advertising, and related communication fields. Students are given more freedom to build their own skillset while still ensuring that the core skills and knowledge are still a part of the program.

This degree explores a number of disciplines needed for developing and delivering effective content. Through analyzing communication campaigns in corporate and public media, students can develop and promote creative strategies and creative execution and employ effective and clear communication in this diverse and customizable program.

As a student, you will learn to develop critical thinking and strategic communication in both a local and global landscape. After graduation, you can find exciting opportunities in career fields such as content creation, communications specialists, public relations specialists, and much more.

Recreation and Sport Management (Online)

The Recreation and Sport Management undergraduate curriculum offers professional preparation programs designed to prepare students for employment in park, recreation, sport or recreational therapy delivery systems. The program is oriented toward direct services, supervisory, and management employment opportunities. A student may elect to gain competencies in the following subplan areas: Parks Management , Recreation and Sport Management , and Recreational Therapy.

Recreation Therapy (Online)

Recreational Therapy, also known as Therapeutic Recreation, is a health profession that uses recreation and leisure based interventions to improve the physical, social, cognitive, and emotional functioning of individuals with disabilities. It is a profession where you can enhance independent living skills and overall quality of life of people through leisure and recreation based treatment and activities.

The Florida International University Recreational Therapy Program provides a nationally recognized curriculum designed "To prepare competent entry-level recreational therapists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains." Students are prepared to work in a variety of human service settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing facilities, veterans’ services, community parks, recreation centers, mental health facilities, correctional facilities and private practice, among others. Students learn from faculty members who are all nationally certified and recreational therapists with many years of experience.

The BS/MS Combined Degree in Recreation and Sport Management: Recreational Therapy Track (RT 4+1) prepares students to be eligible for certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTSR) and work as a recreational therapist after the bachelor’s degree and also be able to complete a master’s degree online in one year after the BS. Having a master’s degree in the field will allow students to be more competitive for RT jobs and likely offer more potential for upward mobility at an agency to become an administrator or manager in the future.

Religious Studies (Online)

The Religious Studies major serves as a basis for students who wish to pursue the study of religion or theology as a career, for students preparing for a career in counseling, education, business, politics, law or medicine, or for students who wish to undertake a dual major in a related field. The major is designed to allow students to focus either on comparative topics, using a critical approach to understanding religious phenomena and their relation to society in a broad cultural context, or on the theory and practice of a specific religious tradition in its historical setting.

Sociologists confront real world problems such as the effects on social life resulting from corporate downsizing, the growth of web-based and mobile technologies, or urban blight and gentrification. The anthropology track educates students in the study of the cultural practices in particular places; how people organize, govern, and create meaning. Anthropologists work on problems such as the cross-cultural delivery of health care, exclusion or assimilation of immigrant populations. Students acquire a global perspective and valuable skills including social survey techniques, ethnography, social statistical sampling methods, computerized social data analysis, and computer-based mapping of social phenomena.

Spanish (Online)

The Spanish major presents a program of study that helps non-native speakers to achieve mastery of the language and provides an opportunity for native speakers to fully develop correctness in its use. The program educates students in language, literature, linguistics and Latin American and Spanish cultures. The department offers a very successful Summer program in Spain, which attracts students from all disciplines. Spanish majors are fully prepared to enter graduate programs in Spanish Literature and Linguistics as well as teach at the high school level. Likewise a second major or minor in Spanish leads to many opportunities in commerce, hospitality and business in Florida and abroad and is ideal for students in International Relations or Government.

Special Education - Educational Foundations and Policy (Online)

The Special Education, Educational Foundations, and Policy Track focuses on exposing students to individuals with special needs. Students will learn about the specific cognitive, language, and social/emotional developmental needs for individuals with disabilities. Students will also learn about general and early education practices and curricula. Students will select cognates within the track that will provide strategic planning for advanced degrees in areas that serve individuals with special education, including Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA), policy, advocacy, law, business, health services, mental health and public administration. These areas of interests will assist students who want to gain knowledge in Special Education, Educational Foundations, and Policy for their advanced degrees and do not plan to be teachers. (NOTE: This track does not result in a teacher certification.)

Sustainability and the Environment (Online)

The Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Science programs prepare students for work and involvement in environmental professions and issues. The Bachelor of Arts degree provides students who are interested in the humanities and social sciences with a broad overview of environmental issues, and prepares students for future study in fields such as environmental administration and law. Although the B.A. degree emphasizes the political, social and economic aspects of environmental issues, basic principles of environmental science are introduced. Students are required to choose a subject specialty (e.g., energy policy) or an appropriate minor (e.g., economics or biology).
